Marcello de Cecco (1939-2016)

Paying tribute to one of the world’s most distinguished economic historians.

Like so many others around the world, we at the Institute were deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Marcello de Cecco passed away last week.
He was a great friend and colleague to many of us and we enormously valued his presence at various Institute events.

Beyond his huge intellectual contributions, he was also a generous, warm, and extremely funny human being, whose good will and humanity stood out in every context.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Dr. Julia Bamford, the distinguished linguist whom Marcello married, and their family.

Though videos of Marcello de Cecco are a poor consolation, we are glad that the Institute did film a series of conversationsthat quite comprehensively cover many areas in which he worked; another generation can come to know him however imperfectly.
