Thumbnails

Thumbnail images display on landing pages and related content areas as a small image alongside an item’s title (and in some cases short description).

Thumbnails are not required, but they introduce context to snippets of content and add color to the page. In Craft, the following entries allow for thumbnail images:

  • Blog Article
  • Course
  • Event
  • Video

Preparing assets

  • Orientation: Rectangle
  • Size: 394px wide by 267px tall.

Guidelines

  • Adjust levels and positioning in Photoshop. Higher contrast photos will translate better to the black and white treatment applied to nonvideos.
  • For videos, try to avoid positioning a face in the middle third of the thumbnail and choosing a crop that focuses on a single individual (not a side portrait view).
  • For event thumbnails, use a photo of the location.
  • Consider that the thumbnail will scale down in size depending on the usage—avoid detailed photographs.
  • When you’re ready to save out the JPEG, hide the red layers and make sure the layer you’d like to export is in view.
  • Select File > Save for web. When you’re ready to save out the JPEG, select File > Save for web, and save out at quality 60. “Optimized” and “convert to sRGB” should be checked.
  • Upload the full-color photo. The black and white treatment for nonvideos and play button for videos will be applied automatically.
