The YSI Africa working group focuses on identifying the key economic issues for Africa. The discussion is open to young scholars across the continent and is an entryway to participate in YSI’s broader initiatives at a global level.

The African continent is one the fastest growing regions in the World today. However, it is also the poorest continent in the world. Colonial legacies, weak institutions, high inequality and poor education, among many other afflictions, all bedevil Africa. Yet there is a robustness to Africa’s growth that hasn’t been seen for many decades combined with high rent-seeking behaviour and frequent cases of poor governance.

YSI Africa’s participants focus on determining the key economic issues facing Africa today. In 2015, our primary goal is to recruit members across the entire continent. We plan to host a one-day conference toward the end of the third quarter of 2015 which will bring young scholars not only from Africa but across the world together to help define the agenda. YSI Africa will host a webinar series, set up online reading groups, and tap into the broader INET network to expose African scholars to international debate and resources to help in their graduate and professional work.
